Hamilton, Ontario

Our In The Know Local City Host (and our founder) Sharon Ricci explores Hamilton, Ontario and shares her favorites and her must-sees!

As our City Host you explored the city - share some of your favorites and must-sees!

I'm happy to! As the founder of In The Know Local, I love to travel and share some of the incredible places I visit so other people can be inspired to get out there and experience the best of local.

Since I started In The Know Local as my passion project a while ago, I've showcased many cities but not my own - so I thought I would spend an afternoon showcasing my own hometown of Hamilton, Ontario (Canada!).

Start us off with a great coffee:

For great iced coffee, the friendliest baristas in the city and a hip, urban street vibe, I always head to Starbucks on Locke Street. My pick? Cold brew with no sugar, light water and extra extra ice. The weather was great so I grabbed a patio table and enjoyed the pooch parade going by my table.

Name one of your favorite streets:

Locke Street is home to more dogs per capita than any other neighborhood in Hamilton! (By the way, Locke Street BIA has arranged for Unlocked Saturdays all summer 2021 - it will be all pedestrian all day long!).

I hear you have a Food Truck you love?

While I was on Locke I stopped for a bite to eat at the Shuck Truck - permanently parked a block away from Starbucks. My usual order of a Shrimp Po-Boy with fries didn’t disappoint. And of course, I asked for extra OG Garlic Sauce (okay, full disclosure... I purchased a bottle to enjoy at home!). Being a west end girl, it’s definitely where I feel most comfortable but for my hometown tour I ventured into new neighborhoods and wasn’t disappointed!

An eyeglass store made your "Best of" list?

I headed to James Street and checked out some cool new glasses at Dresden. Hit them up, your face will thank them! I chose pink frames because pink’s my jam :)

Burger Time? Where do you go?

Then I hit up Augusta Street and the best burgers in town at The Ship. I mean, if you love burgers, fries and an authentic urban vibe, this is the place for you.

No In The Know Local tour is complete until there's a Farmer's Market!

I headed further east to Ottawa Street to enjoy the Farmer’s Market - it’s open every Saturday from 8am - 2pm and there’s too many favs to mention just one vendor so my advice? Head to the market, fill up on fresh, awesome goodies and just try not to smile all day.

Share a cool, less-known area you love:

Shopping makes me hungry so I ventured into one of my favorite up and coming neighborhoods Barton Village. The BIA is working hard to put this funky slice of Hamilton on everyone’s must-visit list and I’m thrilled to mention a few of my favs I encourage you to check out: Motel and their incredible I’m a Vegan salad that makes brussel sprouts, sweet potato and pecans showstoppers. Leave room for a sugar cookie from Hello Baked across the street. The cookie I chose was almost too gorgeous to eat!

I hear Hamilton has a mountain? Take us there:

Leaving Barton Village I headed up the mountain, yes, Hamilton has a mountain. And since I had eaten my way through the day it was time for some sightseeing which I accomplished at Sam Lawrence Park which gave me sweeping views of the city I love. From there I walked along the brow and fell in love with my wonderful city all over again.

Walking the brow and ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the mountain views took a bit of energy so I headed to my last stop of the day: Heal on Concession. I opted for one of their all-time bestsellers: The Dragon x Green Matcha with a Smoothie Bowl. BEST TREAT OF ALL TIME and my body smiled because, well, it tastes delicious and it’s actually good for me.

When you got home you realized you wanted to give a few more shout outs. We're listening!

I headed home to my Queen and Duke neighborhood - full from snacking my way through the city and happy to be sharing some love with the city I call home.

I couldn't hit up all my favorites in one afternoon of staycation touring but I'm not above giving them a shout out: The Mule on King William for tacos and tequilla, Goodness Me and The Mustard Seed for good for me groceries and Brux House for the best cocktails in town and a Instagram worthy patio!
